Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale

Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company™ is a passion for Dr. Pearse Lyons. Lyons, who spent his early years as an intern at both the Guinness and Harp Lager breweries, went on to become the first Irishman to achieve a formal degree in Brewing and Distilling from the British School of Malting and Brewing, a school with over 100 years of history. Five generations of Lyons’ family worked as coopers, supplying barrels to distilleries in Ireland. Lyons’ history, experience, and passion converged serendipitously in Kentucky.

In 1999, when the former Lexington Brewing Company closed its doors, Lyons resurrected the brewing and distilling tradition of Lexington that dates back to the 1790s. At the time and to this day, Alltech and Lyons had one strategy: make the very best beers. From that mission came Kentucky Ale™ and Kentucky Light™, a Kölsch style beer. Capitalizing on Kentucky’s position as producer of 98% of the world’s bourbon, Kentucky Ale was married with one of the state’s most unique assets: the bourbon barrel. Within hours of mature Kentucky bourbon leaving the barrel, Kentucky Ale takes up a six-week residence in the used cask, creating a distinctive taste, color and fragrance. Tried before, but never duplicated, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale™ is the flagship of Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company, winning countless awards including medals at the Great American Beer Fest.

With a little creative curiosity, we used spent bourbon casks, fresh from decanting, and filled them with our very own Kentucky Ale. From barrels that once held the finest bourbons of Kentucky, we present Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, a smooth, golden elixir unlike any other. Subtle yet familiar flavours of vanilla and oak are imparted to this special ale as it rests in the charred barrel. We attribute this to what the bourbon maker calls the “angel’s share”. Elegantly smooth and modestly carbonated, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is a fine sipping ale with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted Kentucky bourbon. Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is a  perfect aperitif or after dinner drink.
